Our Signature Sundarban Itinerary

Three days, two nights, and every hour of it built around the tide rather than the clock. This is the trip we have run more times than any other — six hundred and twelve departures and counting — and it remains the most complete introduction to the delta we know how to give.

You will spend two full days on the water, visit three watchtowers including the canopy walk at Dobanki, sit through a Bonobibi folk performance in the village, and eat food cooked on the deck of your own boat. Groups are capped at twenty-four so nobody is fighting for a place at the rail.

Come for the tiger. Stay for the silence after the engine cuts, when the only sound left is water moving through the mangrove roots.

Day By Day

Day 01

Kolkata → Godkhali → Pakhiralaya

Pick-up from Science City, Kolkata at 6:30 AM. A three-hour drive through the rice belt of South 24 Parganas brings you to Godkhali jetty, where your launch is waiting. Breakfast is served on board as you cross the Vidya river. Permits are collected at Sajnekhali, then an afternoon of slow cruising through the Gomdi and Pichkhali creeks. Check in at the eco cottage by evening; Bonobibi folk theatre after dinner.

Day 02

The Full Safari Day — Three Watchtowers

This is the day people book the trip for. On the water by 6:30 AM with tea and biscuits, working the narrow channels while the tide is right. Sudhanyakhali watchtower first — the sweetwater pond where deer and wild boar come to drink, and where tigers are most often seen. Lunch is cooked on board and eaten mid-river. Afternoon at Dobanki canopy walk, twenty feet above the forest floor, then Panchamukhani where five rivers meet, timed for the four o'clock light.

Day 03

Sajnekhali, Village Walk → Kolkata

An early cruise to the Sajnekhali interpretation centre: the mangrove museum, the crocodile and turtle hatchery, and the heronry. Back to the village for a walk through the paddy embankments and the honey collectors' quarter, then brunch at the cottage. Depart Godkhali around 1:00 PM, reaching Kolkata between 5:00 and 6:00 PM depending on traffic.

Questions We Are Asked Most

No honest operator can promise that. The Indian Sundarbans hold around a hundred tigers across 4,260 square kilometres of dense mangrove, and they are strong swimmers that move constantly. Across a full season our guests report a sighting on roughly one trip in six — higher in December and January when the animals come to the sweetwater ponds. What you will certainly see is spotted deer, wild boar, estuarine crocodiles, water monitors, macaques and a great deal of birdlife.
The Classic package uses air-conditioned cottages at Pakhiralaya with attached western bathrooms, running hot water, 24-hour power backup and mosquito nets. It is clean, comfortable and simple — this is a forest village, not a city hotel. The Luxury Delta Cruise upgrades you to a cabin on our private double-decker launch.
Yes. Boats carry life jackets sized for children, the decks are railed, and a first-aid trained crew member travels on every departure. The only real physical demand is climbing the watchtower steps, which is optional. We have hosted guests from four to eighty-six.
Muted colours — olive, khaki, grey, never bright white or red. A wind layer even in summer, because mornings on open water are cold. Mosquito repellent, sunscreen, a hat, binoculars if you own them, and a dry bag for your camera. Leave the drone at home; they are prohibited in the reserve.
For groups of six or more we run private boats on any date you choose, with your own guide and cook. Families and photography groups usually prefer this. Write to us with your dates and we will quote within the same day.
